The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) requires local authorities to define ‘mineral safeguarding areas’ in order to protect specific minerals from becoming inaccessible (sterilised) due to development.  Consequently, the local authority may require a mineral assessment as part of the planning process.

Michael D Joyce Associates LLP routinely provides such mineral assessment reports that address the mineral reserves concerned.  In virtually all cases, development can continue due to the fact that the mineral reserves concerned cannot be extracted economically, and as such there is no requirement to prevent development.
